Bertin Sustainable Supply Chain Linkages Pilot Project.
The Amazon Environmental Research Center and Aliança da Terra have combined their research and technical capacities to form the front line in Amazonian conservation in the International Finance Corporation/Bertin project. The project links Bertin with producers in order to assure compliance with IFC standards. The IFC/Bertin project’s intention is to create a sustainable beef supply chain in the region surrounding Bertin’s Marabá plant in the state of Pará. During the first nine months of the project, Bertin will build up its capacity to work with regional producers and create a source of sustainable beef. This project will also improve local institutions, the local environment, and certify the legality of the entire beef supply chain. The project will involve 20 producers who will receive the following services: geo-processing assistance, a complete socio-environmental analysis of their property, and training in cattle handling techniques and good land stewardship such as pasture management and intensive grazing. Upon the completion of certifying these producers and other indirect suppliers, Bertin will have fulfilled its legal requirements and attained high operational standards, allowing for better access to export markets. Bertin will finish the project with a data base with SIG technology available to the producers and a sustainable beef program applicable throughout the supply chain.
